When I see people with makeup, my first thought is that they look like a clown.
So today, I’d like to talk about makeup from a different perspective, the perspective of someone who was raised without it.
I was brought up in a strict religious home and neither my mother or family friends or members of our church wore makeup.
As a child, seeing someone with makeup was very strange. It looked either like a clown face or someone with plastic skin.
As an adult I now wear some makeup; mascara mostly, or some powder foundation and lip gloss. My makeup style is ‘natural’ and my mascara usually gets used five times in five years before going gluggy and needing a replacement.
But I still see makeup on other people and it looks strange to me. I expect to see beautiful varying skintones, but instead see skin that looks all one unnatural colour and texture. I expect beautiful pink natural lips, but instead, see bright and strange reds and burgundies and purples.
So just remember – how someone sees beauty products is based on what they’re raised with and their perceptions. Just because you feel as if those products are the only way to be beautiful doesn’t mean it’s the only thing people see when they look at you.
Throughout history, beauty products have included everything from Egyptian eye and white skin, through to unibrows, black teeth and bee-sting lips.
Underneath, you are natural and beautiful without needing an abstract art piece on your face.
